Privacy policy

The short version: Curtail collects nothing, transmits nothing, and has no servers. Everything the app knows stays on your phone.

What Curtail does

Curtail helps you limit time in apps you choose. When your time budget is spent (or during a bedtime window you configure), an animated pet walks over the app until your break ends.

Data collection

The app does not collect, store on any server, share, or sell any data. There are no accounts, no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, and no network communication of any kind in the app. This website is a separate, ordinary website; what it loads is described in its own section below.

Permissions and what they are used for

• Usage access: used only to detect which app is currently on screen, so Curtail knows when a guarded app is open. No app content is read. Nothing is logged off-device or transmitted.
• Display over other apps: used only to draw the break overlay (the pet and its countdown).
• Notifications: used for the guard-status notification, optional break warnings, and alerts if a permission is turned off.
• List of installed apps: Curtail asks Android for the apps that have a launcher icon, and reads their names and icons, so it can show you a list to pick from. This happens entirely on your phone. The list is never transmitted and never stored: only the apps you yourself choose to guard are saved.
• No internet permission: the app does not declare Android’s INTERNET permission at all, so the operating system itself prevents it from making a network request, even by accident. You don’t have to take my word for it: the permission list on the Google Play listing is the receipt.

Data stored on your device

Curtail stores your settings and simple counters about the apps YOU chose to guard, never anything device-wide, in the app’s private storage on your phone. Day-by-day counters (time in guarded apps, per-guarded-app time, opens and sitting lengths, coarse time-of-day buckets, breaks taken and finished, walk-aways, bedtime outcomes, early dismissals) are kept for about 90 days, then condensed into monthly totals. Those monthly totals, plus lifetime keepsakes (days since install, best streak, milestones), are kept until you delete them or uninstall. A “What your buddy remembers” screen in Settings lists everything stored and can erase it on the spot. Your phone’s own encrypted device backup (if you have it enabled in Android settings) may carry this local data to your next phone; Curtail itself never transmits anything. Uninstalling the app deletes everything.

How that data is protected

Everything above is written to Curtail’s private app storage, which Android isolates from other apps at the operating-system level: no other app on your phone can read it. Because nothing is ever sent anywhere, there is no server to breach, no account to compromise, and no third party holding a copy. The app requests no permission it does not use, and the sensitive ones it does need (usage access and display over other apps) are granted by you by hand and revocable by you at any time in Android’s settings.

Children

Curtail is a self-control tool intended for users aged 13 and older. It is not directed at children and does not monitor anyone other than the device’s owner.

Changes

If this policy ever changes (for example, if an optional feature that uses the network is added), the change will be described here and in the app’s store listing before it takes effect.

Who publishes this app

Curtail is published by Gediminas Blazys of Vilnius, Lithuania, the developer named on the app’s Google Play listing.

This website

Everything above is about the app. curtail.app itself is an ordinary website, and unlike the app it uses a few common tools, each of which runs only if you agree to it in the consent banner:

• Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics, to see which pages get visited. Analytics sets cookies (_ga and one per property, kept for up to two years). Provider: Google LLC, certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
• Microsoft Clarity, which records how pages are used (scrolling, taps, heatmaps and session replays, with typed input masked). It sets cookies (_clck, _clsk). Provider: Microsoft Corporation, certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
• A Ko-fi tip panel, which loads only if you open it by choosing to leave a tip; nothing from Ko-fi loads before that.

Nothing on this list runs before you choose. Your choice itself is kept on your device in a consent cookie (CookieConsent, twelve months), which is the one strictly necessary cookie this site sets. Declining changes nothing about how the site works, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time from the cookie settings link in the footer. Fonts are served from this site itself, so no font provider sees your visit.

Under the GDPR you can ask for access to, correction of, or deletion of anything the tools above hold about you, object to or restrict the processing, take your data with you, and complain to a supervisory authority; for Lithuania that is the State Data Protection Inspectorate (vdai.lrv.lt).
